Using Positive Behavior Supports to Exponentially Extend Students’ Motivations

Positive behavior supports are typically presented as a collection of methods to simply manage, or sustain student behaviors at basic levels, and in support of civil cultures in classroom settings. However, with the inclining demands of today’s world, human performance must incline at the same rate to match them. If human performance must be higher, then societies’ methods, including school-based practices, must help learners to wring more from their academic performance. The common approach of managing and sustaining behavior is appropriate, but falls far short of using positive behavior support principles and techniques to draw from students their full interests and capabilities. In this session, participants will explore behavioral principles and techniques to help students’ unleash the 30% of interest, effort and ingenuity they hold back, or never spend on their own learning.

#CSforALL Rural Students: Coding is Elementary

Computer science teacher challenges include isolation, lack of adequate CS background, and limited professional development resources (Yadav, 2016). Implementing equitable district-wide CSforALL brings even more considerable challenges and requires an approach which supports teachers and districts through ongoing PD, district instructional coaches, a focus on content and pedagogy, and collaboration between teachers and with district leadership. Sustainability is an additional challenge requiring a long-term district-wide solution.

Juab School District, with funding from the Utah STEM Action Center, has partnered with the nonprofit organization BootUp Professional Development to support the Juab Elementary Coding Initiative. We have rolled out a computing curriculum for 100% of our 5th - 6th graders and will add all 4th graders to the program this fall. Krystle Bassett, Innovation Specialist at Juab School District will share tangible implementation tips while highlighting and detailing challenges and successes.

Using Engagement and Enjoyment to Increase Equity in College Prep

Relevance should be an essential and achievable goal for the schools, educators and content providers who are involved in educating 21st century learners. All content―test prep included―must be culturally relevant, accessible through preferred digital platforms, fun and engaging, and reinforce the core competencies needed for success in college and career.

In this session, educators will learn about Shmoop’s digital content platform and library of materials that truly “speak student” and will gain proven strategies to deploy digital content to achieve positive outcomes including increased engagement, motivation, equity, creativity, and enjoyment of education―plus outstanding results in school and on the ACT!

Utah’s students use Shmoop to prepare for the ACT and have achieved some of the nation’s highest scores on the test for the past several years. Did you know Shmoop also has a full library of digital content in all subjects, including literature, science, math and social studies, as well as business, life skills, career prep, preparation for every AP test, and much more. All content is presented with a consistent goal in mind: to be relevant and engaging to today’s learners.

At the end of this session, participants will reflect on the following question: How can I use digital content, along with my instructional practices, to strengthen motivation and engagement for my students? You will consider techniques for presenting content in a way that students truly want to engage with, so they are driven to learn and achieve.
