Disciplinary Literacy

Are you a secondary content-area teacher? Do you struggle with ways to teach student how to read, write, and think like an expert in your field? It is imperative that students learn how to apprentice like the professionals in your field in order to successfully grasp the needed concepts. This session will introduce concepts around disciplinary literacy and focus on instructional strategies and skills for different disciplinary subjects such as English, math, science, and social studies, among others.

This presentation will cover DYAD reading along with DIBELS and how to improve your overall literacy scores at an elementary level. Things that will be covered are how to start and implement DYAD reading into your classroom as well as using DIBELS scores to implement interventions within your own class.

Changes to Data Gateway: Accessing New Student Achievement Results

This presentation will focus on how to access, understand and utilize new statewide assessment results in the Utah State Board of Education’s Data Gateway system. We will also share proposed updates and changes to Data Gateway, and how educators can use new assessment data to inform instructional practice. This session will employ hands-on activities and group discussion to foster engagement and knowledge of data literacy, interpretation, and data-driven instruction. Classroom teachers, instructional coaches, and school and district leaders are encouraged to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring a personal electronic device with a web browser and internet access to fully participate in this session.

Diversity vs. Disability

How can you tell if your EL student has a disability or is simply adjusting to a new culture and language? This session will explore the areas of language proficiency, achievement, behavior and adaptation to determine whether or not a student is progressing appropriately. Attendees will leave with information about "red flags" that might indicate the need for further information as well as a list of best practices for supporting EL students in the general education classroom.
