Utah Model Principal Mentoring Framework

The Utah State Board of Education accepted sixteen recommendations from a School Leadership Task Force regarding principal preparation, coaching, mentoring, professional development, and licensing. USBE staff have been working to operationalize those recommendations in the past 6 months. In this session we will present a draft of the Utah Model Principal Mentoring Framework currently being reviewed and considered by the Board.

I am on a mission to empower our students with important leadership skills. Why? Our children do not feel safe. We live in a world of untethered social media, where bullying runs wild, unrealistic images create unhealthy comparisons, and school shootings have come to be expected, no matter how big or small the school. With suicide rates on the rise and anxiety disorders and depression being diagnosed in unprecedented numbers, our kids are in crisis. I'm arming them with the tools to help them cope with these issues. I call them the Three C's of Leadership: Commitment, Courage, and Compassion. I'm teaching them to stand up, reach out, and lead - to be the one who can make a difference in somebody else's life.

Antecedent Interventions-Preventing Problem Behavior

We will discuss strategies to prevent and de-escalate problem behaviors by exploring evidence-based antecedent strategies. Ecological conditions and antecedent events set the stage for problem behavior so we want to identify and alter those triggers. We will also discuss teaching replacement behaviors that get the same result as the previous problem behavior.
