#CSforALL Rural Students: Coding is Elementary

Computer science teacher challenges include isolation, lack of adequate CS background, and limited professional development resources (Yadav, 2016). Implementing equitable district-wide CSforALL brings even more considerable challenges and requires an approach which supports teachers and districts through ongoing PD, district instructional coaches, a focus on content and pedagogy, and collaboration between teachers and with district leadership. Sustainability is an additional challenge requiring a long-term district-wide solution.

Juab School District, with funding from the Utah STEM Action Center, has partnered with the nonprofit organization BootUp Professional Development to support the Juab Elementary Coding Initiative. We have rolled out a computing curriculum for 100% of our 5th - 6th graders and will add all 4th graders to the program this fall. Krystle Bassett, Innovation Specialist at Juab School District will share tangible implementation tips while highlighting and detailing challenges and successes.

Potential Energy: 3D Learning with Kindergartners

Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum will be showcasing their outreach program, Potential Energy, which uses three-dimensional teaching methods to introduce physics concepts to kindergarten students. The Potential Energy program (PEP) is a free, 45-minute per class program offered to schools across the state. It covers Utah Core Science Standard 3 Objective 1 for the kindergarten curriculum but was designed to be easily transferred to the new SEEd standards. Students participate in hands-on experimentation as well as see demonstrations that show concepts such as gravity, forces, and laws of motion. With guidance from an outreach educator, students discover and describe these physics basics without being overwhelmed by complex vocabulary or abstract ideas. Presenters will walk through the program while explaining how the youngest learners come to understand topics that have traditionally been viewed as too complex for the kindergarten classroom and how common misconceptions can be addressed in the earliest grade levels.

Changes to Data Gateway: Accessing New Student Achievement Results

This presentation will focus on how to access, understand and utilize new statewide assessment results in the Utah State Board of Education’s Data Gateway system. This workshop will focus on introducing teachers to coding with the Sphero robot. The Sphero is a robotic ball gaming device that is controlled with the Sphero EDU app on a smartphone or tablet. FOSStering the 3 Dimensions: Getting You from Here to There

Come see how to get from the outgoing science standards to the new SEEd Standards. Participants tackle an engineering design challenge in incremental steps. They first design a cart that can roll "from here to there" and identify the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) being utilized. They then continue with an investigation involving gravity and explore how start position on a ramp affects the distance the cart travels. Before the participants go on to the next part, they determine which Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) are being addressed. The final challenge incorporates the participants' knowledge of magnetism into their cart design to meet new challenges. This investigation develops understanding of engineering design concepts and provides opportunities for students to engage in engineering practices. The Cross Cutting Concepts are determined to show how the parts are interrelated.

What Do You Do When They Already Know It?

This high-energy presentation provides teachers and school leaders with a variety of simple-yet-innovative teaching strategies that will enhance the learning within any classroom. Topics to be addressed include differentiated methods for increasing content-specific vocabulary, how to build rapport with students and parents through writing, and engaging ways for students to summarize their learning. Each strategy presented will be modeled, and participants will leave with a clear understanding of what the strategy is as well as how to implement it. Additionally, many of the techniques shared will center on the role that movement plays in learning, the value that comes from self-assessment, and the increasing importance that personalized learning plays in today's classrooms. Regardless of the technique, each of the methods described can be easily adapted to fit within any curriculum, regardless of grade or subject matter.

Utah Aspire Plus: Assessing Students' College Readiness

The Utah Aspire Plus is a first-of-its-kind custom assessment measuring student knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in reading, English, math and science. The assessment consists of both ACT Aspire and Utah teacher-written questions and is administered to 9th and 10th grade students. The Utah Aspire Plus provides parents, students, and educators with information about student academic proficiency, academic growth, and college and career readiness. This presentation will review the purpose of the assessment, the content areas and Utah Core Standards assessed, and information on how ‘college readiness’ is measured and reported on Utah Aspire Plus reports. We will also discuss ways educators can analyze and interpret data from Utah Aspire Plus and how the ACT assessment standards align with the Utah Core Standards. Participants use a spoon-gong system to review their understanding of how to produce sound and to develop a simple model of how sound travels. Then, they apply their knowledge of how sounds travel to make a device to send whisper messages over a distance. 13.1 Ways Teaching is Like Running a Half Marathon

Whenever I tell people that I run half marathons or I mention to them that I'm a middle school teacher, their answers are usually the same -

Ugh. Why would you want to do that?

And that response is the premise of 13.1 Ways That Teaching Middle School is Like Running a Half Marathon. This high-energy session is about all the challenges that we teachers face on a daily basis. Like our classes, some of the topics addressed are very serious (the importance of planning, not wasting time, persevering through difficult times), while others are a bit more light-hearted (learning to eat in 15 minutes, wanting to change careers mid-lesson, ultimate bladder control). Regardless of if you're a runner or not, these are all topics that teachers will understand all-to-well.

After providing an overview of each challenge, three ""next-day"" strategies will be provided to help teachers become better at their craft. That means you'll leave with close to 40 strategies that will easily fit into any content area or grade level!

Schoolyard Scientists: Exploring Life Sciences using iNaturalist (Hour 1 of 2)

iNaturalist is an app developed by the California Academy of Sciences to connect people with exploring nature in their local environment while documenting ecological data and creating awareness of biodiversity worldwide. If you are interested in learning about this great tool to supplement Life Science programming join us as we explore iNaturalist’s potential for increasing science literacy for your students. This session will include a thorough introduction to iNaturalist and a hands-on demo of its functionality as it applies to getting students involved in scientific practices of making observations, questioning through inquiry, analyzing data, and contributing to the broader Community Science movement.

We will begin this workshop by going over utilizing iNaturalist as a tool for students and teachers. We will then have a hands-on training using iNaturalist on a device (phone/tablets) before we dive into exploring the many functions of the iNaturalist webpage. Then we will demo how to create your own projects, places, and guides within the website for general classroom use. At the end we will share educator resources (curriculum and activities) developed in conjunction with City Nature Challenge.

Using Robotics to Meet the New Science Standards (Hour 1 of 2)

A close read of the new (draft) Science standards reveals that students should be learning engineering principles and creating their own models for each of the major concepts. This can be overwhelming, especially when many of the topics we've taught in the past are switching to different grade levels! On top of this are additional encouragements to incorporate more computer science into our teaching. The only solution is to use an integrated, project-based approach. In this session, we will engage participants in creating and programming robotic models of science concepts. We will also share interdisciplinary projects that we have developed and piloted with elementary students and teachers in the STEM endorsement program.

Phenomenon-based Learning Using Museum Objects (Hour 1 of 2)

Natural History Museum of Utah educators will introduce participants to Research Quest - a free suite of online investigations - to demonstrate how middle school teachers can engage their students in some of the most intriguing mysteries of our time, robust debate about current research, and developing explanations and arguments to explain their ideas - all while using 3D technology to access many of the museum's rich fossil resources. Participants will learn how to use Research Quest to support collaborative student work to gather empirical data by making quantitative and qualitative observations of real fossils with modeling and guidance from one of the museum's award winning scientists. We'll also explore strategies for making student thinking visible as students move from using intuitive to increasingly complex critical thinking skills. These strategies provide important supports to guide students as they weigh the quality and strength of their evidence and use that evidence to develop their explanations and construct arguments. Participants will receive supporting materials designed for the classroom teacher and their students - including learning assessment tools for both.

Watch your makerspace fly with a Hummingbird!

The Hummingbird Duo may be the first electronics kit that is fun and educational for a fourth grader, a high school student, or an adult maker. In this workshop participants will get hands-on experience creating a simple robot using the Hummingbird robotics kit. The Hummingbird is is an Arduino-based computer board that operates as a tethered input/output control panel. Students write programs which control motors, servos, LEDs, and sensors. The robots are simple construction using craft materials or anything you have laying around.

Schoolyard Scientists: Exploring Life Sciences using iNaturalist (Hour 2 of 2)

iNaturalist is an app developed by the California Academy of Sciences to connect people with exploring nature in their local environment while documenting ecological data and creating awareness of biodiversity worldwide. If you are interested in learning about this great tool to supplement Life Science programming join us as we explore iNaturalist’s potential for increasing science literacy for your students. This session will include a thorough introduction to iNaturalist and a hands-on demo of its functionality as it applies to getting students involved in scientific practices of making observations, questioning through inquiry, analyzing data, and contributing to the broader Community Science movement.

We will begin this workshop by going over utilizing iNaturalist as a tool for students and teachers. We will then have a hands-on training using iNaturalist on a device (phone/tablets) before we dive into exploring the many functions of the iNaturalist webpage. Then we will demo how to create your own projects, places, and guides within the website for general classroom use. At the end we will share educator resources (curriculum and activities) developed in conjunction with City Nature Challenge.

This workshop will showcase using the iNaturalist website and app which can be found for free on android and apple devices. If you have a device and would like to download the app see the links above. Tablets will be provided with the app pre-loaded for those who do not have a device.

Join the Ogden Nature Center as we demonstrate our free state-wide program for 1st grade classrooms. We will demonstrate this 1-hour program focuses on making observations, using the scientific method, investigating differences and similarities between groups and classifying animals. Using live animals, pelts, mounts and other animal bio-facts, Ogden Nature Center staff will go over similarities and differences between mammals, reptiles and birds as students are introduced to how scientists classify living things.
