Empowering 21st Century Learning: The Teaching, Tools, and Transformations

Let's allow sparks to fly with self-directed, empowering learning, and change our kids' uninspired one-word answer to the question, "What did you learn at school today?" Let's unleash authentic learning experiences that include the essential 21st-Century skills critical to our children's future success. Let's lift them up and be more aware and attentive to the wellbeing of our students. Teachers indeed have superpowers, but how will you use yours? Will you grant access to technology that unlocks infinite resources or banish it in favor of "control"? Will you champion student autonomy or belittle it in favor of your own voice? Join us to find answers to these questions and more, and come away a little more empowered yourself as you experience this approach to education, and take away practical ideas to implement in your classrooms.

Integrating Prosocial Learning to Enhance Positive Youth Development (Hour 1 of 2)

Integrating Prosocial Learning and Character Education with Education Standards to Enhance Positive Youth Development demonstrates how to meet educational standards that privilege cognitive aspects of learning while also advancing prosocial or Whole Child efforts (e.g., social emotional learning, academic development, character education, and mental health promotion). The session utilizes a growing body of research to reveal effective ways to implement a curriculum that integrates social, emotional, ethical, and civic aspects of learning with required state standards, and a wide range of "real world" examples that describe how any classroom or school anywhere, can lay a foundation for all young people to succeed.

Classroom Management

Being a teacher trying to deliver core instruction can be difficult when we have students who act out behaviorally in class. We will discuss evidence-based behavior practices as outlined in the LRBI (Least Restrictive Behavior Interventions) from the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). These practices are simple and inexpensive to implement and have positive outcomes for students and teachers. Classrooms are transformed into positive environments, suspensions and truancies are reduced and school culture improves.

Google Jamboard - A Free and Collaborative Interactive Whiteboard for Any Device

Google Jamboard is a new tool in G Suite for Education that you may not be familiar with, but if you've ever wished you could have more than a couple of students working at your Interactive Whiteboard (a.k.a SMARTBoard) at the same time, Jamboard is for you! Draw and sketch ideas, add text with movable "sticky" notes, add any photos and images, even Drive documents - and your students can interact and add their ideas in real time, from just about any device you (or your students) have in your classroom. If you run out of space, you can add as many more frames as needed. And just like any other Google Doc, all edits are saved and can be shared with a few clicks.

This will be a hands-on, interactive session, so it will help if you install the Jamboard app on your iPhone/iPad or Android device!
