3 Skills to Manage Difficult Conversations with Parents

As an educator, your rewarding job comes along with a host of challenges you can't control including overcrowded classrooms, limited funding, mounting regulations, etc. However, research shows that one of the most demanding and pervasive challenges educators face in their work to teach, lead, and protect children is interacting with upset and frustrated parents. Often, these emotional parents present with very narrow perspectives, little information, and extreme biases. Reaching an understanding and solution can feel daunting to a teacher, administrator, or other educator unfairly positioned between a protective parent and his or her child.

Join J. Lynn Jones, a senior trainer with VitalSmarts, whose 40-year education background includes 29 years of school and district level administrative experience. J. Lynn will share three skills educators can use when they find themselves in crucial conversations with students. You'll learn:
  • How to reach dialogue with parents—even when the stakes are high, opinions differ, and emotions run strong.
  • How to calmly and respectfully address concerns, disagreements, and even mistakes.
  • How to move the conversation away from confrontation and towards solutions.

#CSforALL Rural Students: Coding is Elementary

Computer science teacher challenges include isolation, lack of adequate CS background, and limited professional development resources (Yadav, 2016). Implementing equitable district-wide CSforALL brings even more considerable challenges and requires an approach which supports teachers and districts through ongoing PD, district instructional coaches, a focus on content and pedagogy, and collaboration between teachers and with district leadership. Sustainability is an additional challenge requiring a long-term district-wide solution.

Juab School District, with funding from the Utah STEM Action Center, has partnered with the nonprofit organization BootUp Professional Development to support the Juab Elementary Coding Initiative. We have rolled out a computing curriculum for 100% of our 5th - 6th graders and will add all 4th graders to the program this fall. Krystle Bassett, Innovation Specialist at Juab School District will share tangible implementation tips while highlighting and detailing challenges and successes.

Don't Panic: Mythbusting Student Data Privacy Requirements in Your Classroom

Utah law requires districts and schools to follow reasonable steps to protect the privacy and security of student education records. Due to overreacting or simple misinformation, some of the policies that have been adopted by schools have placed an unnecessary amount of burden on teachers, even though the law does not specifically require those policies. In this session, we will go over exactly what the law says schools can and cannot do (spoiler alert: be reasonable, not overbearing) so that we can find the balance between keeping students safe online and providing them with an innovative, high-quality education.

Tech in the Classroom: What’s Working?
This presentation will provide best practices and lessons learned from Utah schools as well as recent national research regarding education and technology. The best practices to be presented are a result of stakeholder feedback from schools who have adopted literacy and math software programs throughout Utah in the past few years. The best practices fall under two phases:  what elements should be in place before implementation and what supports need to be in place during implementation, including teacher practices. The national research presented reviews recent results from studies conducted in classrooms and schools throughout the country. They focus on teacher and school practices that have high effects on student learning in a technology-infused classroom as well as practices that do not contribute to student gains.  Specifically, the presentation examines personalized learning with technology, online learning, and the effects of teacher engagement when students are using technology.

Using Robotics to Meet the New Science Standards (Hour 1 of 2)

A close read of the new (draft) Science standards reveals that students should be learning engineering principles and creating their own models for each of the major concepts. This can be overwhelming, especially when many of the topics we've taught in the past are switching to different grade levels! On top of this are additional encouragements to incorporate more computer science into our teaching. The only solution is to use an integrated, project-based approach. We will also share interdisciplinary projects that we have developed and piloted with elementary students and teachers in the STEM endorsement program.

Information literacy includes the ability to identify, find, evaluate, and use information effectively. From effective search strategies to evaluation techniques, students learn how to evaluate the quality, credibility, and validity of websites, and give proper credit. Living in a “copy/paste” culture, students need to reflect on their responsibilities and rights as creators in the online spaces where they consume, create, and share information.
