Surrendering Control . . . An Experiment in Creating Passionate Readers

Everyone loves a drill sergeant, especially middle school students . . . said no teacher ever. Students typically come to middle school as competent readers only to leave thinking that reading is a form of cruel and unusual punishment. Does giving students a choice in what they read make a difference in their performance? How can middle schools foster a passion for reading? How can teachers create life-long readers while mastering essential skills? This data-driven presentation shares one middle school's approach to "killing the classroom novel" to engage students at their current reading level and to help readers take accountability for their growth. The attendees will leave with an understanding of how to balance the idea of student choice and mastery of essential skills to create life long readers.
