2019 Utah Rural Schools Conference

We would like to present what we have learned as we implemented a whole new approach to reading in fifth grade. Based on research presented by Dr. Lance Hatch and information from the Conferring with Readers book, we decided to completely restructure our reading instruction, allowing for much more actual reading time at the students' independent reading levels. This has also provided us with time to confer with individual readers on a regular basis, informally assessing student fluency, comprehension, skills, and strategies. We have been able to discuss and monitor progress, growth, and goals with each student. We have seen incredible gains in their proficiency, motivation, and love for reading! We would be delighted to share this experience and what we have learned through this new adventure.
